Great Home Run contest before the All Star game
For those in the states, you know the story...either by having watched it on TV or have read it in thepaper or heard of it on the news or on ESPN. For those outside of the U.S., our Major League Baseball has a 'mid-season' all star game. The night before it, there is a 'homerun hiting' contest, where various 'sluggers' try to make it through 3 rounds of hitting homeruns. There was a man who plays for a team out of the Dallas, Texas area, the Texas Rangers, named Josh Hamilton. When he was a young man out of High School, he was the #1 DRAFT choice. A phenominal athlete who could do it all. Fast forward a few years and up to 3 years ago, he was out of baseball, a drug addict, and on a few occasions almost died as a result of having overdosed on drugs. Not to applaude this, but he went through some rough times. He is recovered, or continues to recover everyday. At one point he was about 150 lbs. He has turned his life around. I believe he is 27 and about to be 28 and is back up to about 220lbs. He got himself back into great shape and set a record last evening by hitting 28 homeruns in his first round. The next highest number for that round, I think, was 8. And they were not cheap hits. They were BOMBS. 3 over 500 feet. One almost out of Yankee Stadium. Anyway, it was a great display and enjoyable to watch. The kick in the pants is, that he didn't win the overall contest. They do it by rounds and he lost in the 3rd round, 3 to 5 to another player. But in years to come, the man who won won't be remembered as much as Josh and his blasts to the seats.
I also was amazed at Josh Hamilton's performance on Monday evening. And although Morneau "won" the homerun derby (he had 26 total homeruns to Hamilton's 38, quick count here), in 20 years we will still be talking about what Josh Hamilton did and Morneau's trophy will be collecting dust on a shelf in his "man cave".
Hamilton was the incredible, and really was the winner.
